Carnival Cruises’ ‘social-impact’ brand Fathom has announced that the Cuban government has cleared it to include Cuban-born U.S. passengers on its cruises, lifting a threat by Fathom to cancel or postpone sailings if the Cuban-Americans were not permitted. The company had been under intense pressure in the U.S. for refusing to sell them tickets.
The first sailing is scheduled for May 1st, and will be the first U.S.-to-Cuba cruise in more than 50 years. Because of continuing U.S. boycott requirements, it will not be a normal vacation cruise, but will include people-to-people and community service elements in its program.
