Paris: Abandoned rail sites get new lives

Paris is getting a variety of new arts-based venues in a project that will eventually include 14 projects in disused properties of the French rail operator SNCF, which is one of Paris’s largest landowners.

Changing times and needs have meant an inventory of unused spaces, including stations and warehouses, which SNCF has previously preferred to keep that way, battling art collectives and squatters over the spaces.

Now it has decided to cooperate in the proliferation of spaces that will be turned to venues for music, art, gardens and more. Some of the projects, including one that opened two years ago in the former Gare Ornano, are tied with recycling and urban farm initiatives.
