A cruise ship of sorts—the world’s largest Viking dragon ship of modern times—arrived this morning at its winter port of call at Connecticut’s Mystic Seaport.
The reproduction ship, which left Norway in April and crossed the Atlantic by way of Greenland and Iceland, has stopped at New York, sailed the Great Lakes and passed through the Erie Canal, is named Harald Hårfagre, after the 10th-century king who unified Norway.
It will be open to visitors at the maritime museum from tomorrow morning until Oct. 10th; on Oct. 13th Capt. Bjorn Ahlander will speak at Mystic on the adventurous voyage. The boat will remain at Mystic for the winter, but will be covered over until it’s ready to return home.
The ship, 35 metres long, has a beam of 8 metres and a 24-metre mast. For the long voyage, which followed most of the route of Leif Eriksson, it carried historic navigation aids, as well as modern equipment.
