Odense, Denmark, Hans Christian Andersen’s birthplace is building a new museum focused on his life and works, which include fairy-tale classics such as The Little Mermaid, The Emperor’s New Clothes and The Ugly Duckling.
Andersen’s birthplace in Odense is already a small museum of his life; the new building will focus on the world within his fairy tales and other writings that have made him, in the words of a scholar, “without comparison, the worlds most famous Dane.”
While best-known for his fairy tales, Andersen also wrote plays, travelogues, poems and novels. He’s had a new surge of popularity based on the Disney movie Frozen, which is an adaptation of his story The Snow Queen.
The museum is scheduled to open, and has been designed by Japanese ‘starchitect’ Kengo Kuma, whose work includes the new Olympic Stadium in Tokyo. The museum and stadium are both due to open in 2020.
