Alaska’s new perk: Free in-air texting

Alaska’s added a new amenity to is flights: free messaging on all planes equipped with WiFi.

Starting with a beta test now, passengers with smartphones can use Facebook Messenger, iMessage or WhatsApp without needing to pay for WiFi. For now, It’s scheduled to go live system-wide on January 24.

For now, it’s limited to Alaska-branded flights, but the airline says it will be watching feedback to see what changes may be made on its other airline brands, Virgin America and Horizon Air.

Alaska’s also offering a number of other changes, including upgraded choices on the food and drink carts, and free movies to stream through March.
