Hostels, now far more than the backpackers’ haven of years ago, have their own annual awards, the ‘Hoscars,’ awarded based on reports from users of the Hostelworld booking service.
The categories are based on size, country, continent and a few more criteria, including atmosphere. This year’s ‘hostel with the best atmosphere’ went to Goodmorning Lisbon. Another Lisbon hostel, Home Lisbon, topped the list for Best Medium Worldwide Hostel, and five other Lisbon spots were in the top 10.
Other chart-toppers included Best Small Hostel Worldwide and Best Hostel in Europe, Soul Kitchen in St. Petersburg; Best Large Hostel, Ostello Bello Grande in Milan; Best Extra-Large Hostel, The Freehand in Chicago and Best New Hostel, Lub d Phuket, Patong, Thailand.
