French Olympic slogan in English? Mais non!

Paris is pushing hard to make 2024 its Olympic year, but it’s going to have to deal with a tough local crowd first, and they’re upset that the committee has chosen a slogan in English for the campaign.

As if that weren’t bad enough, the chosen slogan “Made for Sharing” has been attacked as more suitable for a pizza chain, and compared to Donald Trump’s way of speaking, although it’s not clear why.

Monday, a coalition of associations filed a lawsuit against the slogan, claiming it violates a 1994 law aimed at protecting the French language, and also of violating the Olympic charter. Incidentally, French is the official language of the games and of the International Olympic Committee.

Bernard Pivot, president of the Academie Goncourt, one of the plaintiffs, told the French press that “Obviously, I find this slogan a mistake, an absurdity. Paris, the capital of the francophone world is bowing to the language not only of Shakespeare but also that of Donald Trump!”
