China’s new take on medical tourism

Medical tourism has become a major travel segment in recent years, as patients travel either to countries with better medical care than their own, or more affordable care. Now China has a new twist to offer: Chinese traditional medecine for visitors.

The Beijing municipal administration has just announced packages based at 15 local traditional medicine hospitals, covering 30 symptoms including insomnia and headaches. The packages include the treatment and tourist programs during the stay in the city. There are over 30 traditional-medicine hospitals in the city along with many clinics.

Chinese traditional medicine involves a number of types of treatment, including accupuncture, herb- and plant-based medicines, incense and more.

The National Tourism Administration and the State Administration of Traditional Medicine announced last summer a plan to develop hundreds of traditional medicine demonstration and treatment areas around the country to cater to travelers.
