The coins tossed into Rome’s famed Trevi Fountain by visitors who hope the legend is true that tossing the coins guarantees their return to Rome will now go to special projects in the city budget, rather than to Catholic charities.
The coins, adding up to about €1 million a year, will be allocated by a special working group in the Mayor’s office of the cash-strapped city.
The city also receives other revenue from the Trevi and other fountains: fines of up to several hundred Euros for those who try to emulate the famous scene in Fellini’s La Dolce Vita where Anita Ekberg plunges into the fountain.
