Thailand beaches go ‘no-smoking’

Thailand has begun turning its beaches into no-smoking zones, and will impose fines for violators—especially those who litter the beach with butts.

The first order covers 24 beaches in 15 provinces, including major tourist areas such as Phuket, Krabi and Koh Samui, according to the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources.

Failure to comply carries a maximum fine of 100,000 baht (about $3000) and/or up to a year in jail. The department spokesmen said that at first there will be warnings before penalties hit, but didn’t say how long the grace period might last.
