Disney Paris plans big expansion

Disneyland Paris, which started life in 1992 looking like a bad marketing fail, but has become Europe’s single biggest private tourism draw, is on a big expansion campaign, with new lands for Star Wars, Marvel and Frozen fans.

The plans, announced by Disney chair Robert Iger and French Pres. Macron, will also add a new lake to be a venue for live entertainment and to connect the new areas. Since the part now accounts for 6.2% of France’s tourism revenue, Macron’s appearance should be no surprise.

The park is located in Marne-la-Vallee, east of Paris and directly on a TGV line. Work on the new areas will begin by 2021. However, all is not clear sailing for the park: it’s never made an annual profit, although losses have been declining. A huge initial debt load accounts for the losses. Disney recently acquired full control of the park, buying out minority partners.
