Barcelona bears down on vacation rentals

Barcelona, which has increasingly limited legal vacation apartment rentals, has now given visitors a tool to check if their rentals are legal.

City regulations designed to keep vacation rentals from taking over needed housing limit the number of licensed short-term apartments, and no new licenses have been issued since 2014. There are 9600 licensed spots.

Increased enforcement has closed down over 2,000 illegal apartments in the past year, although the number may have increased since there have been no new licenses since 2014. To check an apartment, you can enter its address at  http://www.fairhousing.barcelona
