Traveling foodies now have a new tempting tour to try in Ireland, focusing on bacon, beer and chocolate (hence the Salty, Malty, Sweet name). The once-a-week tour offers a day of visits to small producers and growers based around Wexford.
The tour organizer, Gallivanting Tours, charges €180 per person. First stop on the tour is farm-based Bean and Goose chocolates with a lesson in tempering chocolate, and a chance to custom-make a chocolate bar with ingredients foraged or grown on the farm.
Lunch and craft shop visits are then followed by a visit to a farm that is making artisan bacon, and a last stop at a craft brewery, with take-home bottles.
Lorraine O’Dwyer whose company put the tour together, says it’s all about Wexford food: “We’ve always had an amazing amount of artisan food producers and local farmers, but we’ve never shouted about it. What we’re trying to do now is to shout about it, and to tell people about Wexford and its food.”
