New Japan service: Hands-free luggage

A new service, organized by three of Japan’s 2020 Olympic sponsors, aims to make life easier for visitors to Japan by taking over the chore of toting luggage.

The service, called Luggage-Free Travel, collects a customer’s bags at the airport on arrival and moves them directly to the visitor’s hotel room. It will also handle transfers to other hotels or cities, and then return the bags to the airport for departure.

The operation, backed by Panasonic, JTB and Yamato Transport, provides a QR code for tracking bags as they move around; there’s also a 24/7 help center with live chat and—just in case something goes wrong—insurance.

A few similar services operate in other cities, but usually only between lodging and airport. But it could be a helpful and hopefully growing trend!
