No, not the kind in the picture.
With marijuana for recreational use becoming legal across Canada next Wednesday, Air Canada has set out new rules for passengers carrying on its flights. There are basically three, aside from the big one: No smoking onboard.
- No more can be carried than is legal in Canada (30 grams per person)
- It can go in checked baggage or carry-on
- It can’t be carried out of Canada, even to a destination where it’s legal.
The last rule is a warning to passengers traveling from Canada to states in the U.S. where marijuana is legal. That’s because while it is legal in several states, it is not legal under Federal law, and therefore crossing the border with it could lead to arrest. Aside from Canada, the only country that has legalized pot nationwide is Uruguay.
At the same time, Air Canada announced a ban on even off-duty use of marijuana by employees with ‘safety-sensitive’ jobs, including cabin crew and maintenance workers. WestJet, Air Canada’s main domestic rival, did the same.
