WOW Air, the brash Icelandic discounter with the purple planes sent some mixed signals about its trans-Atlantic plans from U.S. airports, after announcing that it was dropping three of its four most recently added.
Despite dropping Cincinnati, Cleveland and St. Louis, the carrier said, it will continue serving Detroit. Its other Midwest base is Chicago Midway. The three dropped cities only started service last May.
Skuli Mogensen, the airline’s head, said he still plans to add other U.S. cities, and would not say that the routes were losing money; instead he said the carrier had better things to do with its planes: “They were not performing as well as many other cities where we think we can add capacity … and do even better.”
That ‘better’ may be based on WOW’s latest venture: Starting soon, the airline will fly between New Delhi and Iceland, possibly juicing a big demand for more connections to the U.S., but likely to larger cities than the ones dropped.
