Charleston, SC nabs an international route

Charleston, South Carolina has hit the jackpot: Not only will it become the smallest U.S. market with nonstop service to Europe, the service will be provided by one of the major airlines, British Air.

Starting next April, BA will fly twice a week to Charleston from London Heathrow, using a 787-8 for the seasonal service, which will run until late October. Other than a Toronto route briefly operated by Porter Airlines in 2015, it’s the only international service the city has had.

The 787, as a long-distance mid-size and economical plane has enabled BA to open a number of less-dense U.S. routes in the past few years, including Nashville, New Orleans and Austin, and will soon fly to Pittsburgh.
