Kyoto gets Japan’s first ‘dispersed hotel’

A new hotel in Kyoto has unusual distances between the lobby, the rooms and the bar…because they’re in different buildings scattered around the neighborhood. It’s the first hotel in Japan to go that way.

Although there have been hotels in some places that pull together a variety of spaces, this one was purpose-built with an unusual mission: to immerse guests in local culture by having them move through it. Guest activities include zen meditation sessionshome-style cooking classes, guided night runs along the river, yoga, tatami mat workshops and talks by local artists.

Rooms range from cubicles with bunk beds to family suites with kitchenettes, and the food offerings in the restaurant reflect a fusion idea, with such offerings as Japanese-styled pinxtos. Rates start at about $90 a night.
