Europe Railpass gets new options

The often-confusing universe of available railpasses offered by a consortium of Europe’s railroads is getting some new options for the coming year, including more member countries.

For starters, the Eurail Global Pass, which provides unlimited travel in all the member countries is adding Lithuania and Macedonia, as well as Great Britain, bringing the total to 31 countries.

There are also new schedule options, with more flexibility. The Global pass is now available for 3, 5 or 7 days of travel within a month or 10 or 15 days within two months, in both cases allowing either consecutive or non-consecutive days. And for those who plan to really move around, a pass that’s good continuously for either 15 or 22 days is also available.

But the passes are not without price, even though they are up to 37% lower than last year. A 3-day pass, for instance, costs the equivalent of $275. Careful buying of point-to-point tickets, especially at discount rates, can often be the best strategy for those who aren’t making too many days on the road.
