Miami’s airport has big future plans

Miami International Airport has its eyes on a future in which passenger and cargo numbers continue to boom, and it’s set aside money to be ready, $5 billion worth.

The funding from Miami-Dade County will go toward expanded and renovated terminals as well as new construction. The airport, which handled 45 million passengers last year, expects as many as 77 million by 2040.

The construction projects will be spread out over a five-to-fifteen year range.

Nearly half of MIA’s passengers are on international flights, and it is the busiest U.S. airport for international cargo.
