Surfing is an important of Hawaiian culture, and remains an extremely popular sport in Hawaiian waters. Every day hundreds of locals and tourists catch the waves very near this spot.
There are many statues celebrating surfing culture throughout Honolulu but I was drawn to this one, situated close to the beach, surrounded by palm and banyan trees. It seems to capture the grace and fun of the sport. The statue was unveiled in 2003 and rests opposite the entrance to the Honolulu Zoo.
