I met these two works by young Brooklyn artists Jen Catron and Paul Outlaw when they were on temporary exhibit in the lobby of the Brooklyn Museum.
Both works are self-circulating fountains. Bright Shiny Object, above, constantly drips chocolate sauce onto the ice cream piled up in the shiny bowl. It’s a much more appetizing piece than Sin(k) which uses brown water pouring into a bathroom sink to indicate pollution that comes with the consumer culture that’s in love with Bright Shiny Objects.
In case you’re wondering, both pieces are papier-mache and resin, and the pumped liquid in both cases is colored water.
