New Portugal Museum: 1,300 Nativities

The Portuguese pilgrimage town of Fatima got a new museum yesterday, surely one of the world’s most unusual: It features over 1,300 Nativity scenes, representing over 70 countries.

The museum was created by the Portuguese Province of the Order of Friars Minor Capuchin, an order created by Francis of Assisi. It’s been active in Portugal since 1956, with its activities centered in the town where a teenage girl reported visions of the Virgin Mary just over a century ago.

The scenes are organized by continent, and include people, animals and landscape of the areas they represent.
