January 7, 2020: New Castle, Pylos, Greece

Like every historic site, there is much more than meets the eye. New Castle in Pylos, Greece, for example was built by the Ottomans from 1571-1572. They ruled Greece from 1498-1685 and 1715-1821.

New Castle is located at the southern entrance of the Bay of Pylos and the 13th century Old Castle, built by the Crusaders, guards the northern entrance. Your first glimpse of the magnificent bay is from the front of the church which was originally a mosque.

132Climb to the castle’s fortified citadel and make sure and take your time at the two museums here featuring items dating from Middle Paleolithic Period (100,000 to 35,000 BC) to Modern Period (1830 to the present).
