Moxy is Breeze Airways, waiting for license

The airline-to-be that’s been flying the news under the code name ‘Moxy’ has revealed its actual name and more of its plans as it waits for an airline operator certificate from the FAA and Department of Transportation.

Moxy, now Breeze, has generated more interest than most start-up airlines largely because of the track record of its founder, David Neeleman, who has a history of spawning successful airlines and has strong financial backing. His past includes being a founder of Morris Air, WestJet, JetBlue and Brazil’s Azul; he is also the principal of TAP Portugal.

Neeleman thinks there’s a niche for an airline that can economically serve mid-size city pairs that have lost service from larger airlines. The plan assumes that economical aircraft at the right size can generate enough business for profit. Breeze has 60 new Airbus A220s on order for delivery starting next year, but hopes to start sooner, as soon as it gets its certificate. It has already arranged to lease 30 Embraer E-195s from Neeleman’s Azul
