The increasing electronic safety equipment on cars these days is getting a counterpart to keep cyclists safe: A handle-bar mounted proximity detector that warns a cyclist if someone is approaching too close from a blind spot.
The system, called SofAlert, gives off an audible warning when the sound and distance detector ‘sees’ something that’s less than 1.5 metres away. A version for trucks is also under development.
The system was tested for four weeks last fall in Brussels by over 100 cyclists; it’s expected to be available in stores by September.
