New York’s subway system is not only a crowded and essential people-mover, it’s also home to a wealth of original and often stunning artworks. The works are often commissioned to represent the area above, as is this one.
Shad Crossing, a 2004 glass tile work by Ming Fay, contains a mixture of references: to the fish that was once a plentiful staple of the Delancey Street markets above, and to the popular romantic comedy, Crossing Delancey.

The station also lies near Orchard Street, named for the orchards and farmlands there of the colonial-era DeLancey family; for one of the platforms, Fay created a long tile mural of a cherry orchard.
