The Lone Cypress is one of the most photographed trees in the world. It’s a Monterey cypress growing on a granite outcropping in Pebble Beach, off 17-Mile Drive. It’s estimated to be about 250 years old.
The Lone Cypress has survived arson fires, paint, California droughts, and storms. However, during a windstorm in 2019 a strong gust broke off the large far-left branch of the tree, significantly altering its shape. These photos were taken before the branch was broken off.
A beautiful example of Nature surviving in the most extreme conditions. I’ve not seen this tree before. At first glance I saw a well manicured Bonsai Tree. But I would resist the temptation to keep it trimmed.
