The Certosa e Museo di San Martino, or Charterhouse of Naples, is an amazing collection of cloisters, halls, chapels and artwork that’s easily worth a full day’s visit.
But it’s also an amazing collection of columns and plinths and carvings and paintings and everything else that can accumulate dirt, dust or decay. When I visited a few years ago, I was impressed with the cleaning staff, hard at work while we toured.
And sometimes, not so much a cleanup as a decorative touch. Before when we first entered the cloister garden, and then an hour or two later.
