Waimea Canyon State Park, Kauai

Waimea Canyon State Park, located in Waimea, Kauai, is one of the most memorable attractions in a state of great natural beauty.  The Park features the amazing gorge of Waimea Canyon, a surprisingly deep and colorful spot often dubbed the “Grand Canyon of the Pacific”.

The road leading to the rim of Waimea Canyon provided last weekend’s One Clue Mystery photo (see below).  I thought it a particularly difficult clue and it eluded even our great team of travel sleuths.

The canyon was carved by the Waimea River as it eroded the lava rock of the region over a period of millions of years.  It’s a surprisingly large canyon for a small island like Kauai, measuring ten miles long, a mile wide, and up to 3500 ft deep.

There are several lookout spots on Waimea Canyon Drive, all on the rim of the canyon, the most popular being Waimea Canyon Lookout which offers great panoramic views of the canyon.  Most of the photos in this blog were taken at that stop.  In addition to its rich tapestry of colors and textures, the canyon offers a plentiful hiking opportunity for the young and fit, and picnicking spots.
