The small city of Sandpoint, in the Idaho panhandle, is best known as a tourist destination. In the winter it’s a base for people skiing Schweitzer mountain. In the summer people enjoy its fine weather and access to massive Lake Pend Oreille.
One of the biggest gatherings in Sandpoint each year is Lost in the 50s. I reported on the activities last year in some detail, which you see at this link if you are interested. Briefly, classic car and truck collectors from hundreds of miles around descend on Sandpoint during the second to last weekend in May. Friday night a car parade is held, along with a 1950s street dance. On Saturday hundreds of these collectible vehicles are displayed on the streets of downtown for all to study and enjoy.
I revisited Sandpoint to partake in Lost in the 50s last weekend. I thought I’d share some my favorite vehicles from this year.
We had to park a number of blocks away and found classic cars and trucks parked on the streets of Sandpoint as we made our way to the city center.
While not formally part of the classic car show, there were several “monster cars” on display. The boy in front of the rear tire is 9 years old, to give you a size perspective….

My eye was drawn to this child weeping on the front fender of a car because of a dropped chocolate ice-cream cone. Only — it’s not a kid but a cleverly presented mannequin.
