The city of Leiden is taking a step back into its past to repaint its bridges in colors some of which haven’t been used for centuries. With at least 88 bridges spanning its 28km of canals, it’s going to be a visible difference for visitors and locals.
One bridge, the Rembrandtbrug (above) has drawn both praise and sour comments that the color looks like “melted Cadbury Creme Eggs.” It was the first to get a new paint a few years ago, and the city’s Council has now decided to extend the plan to the rest.
Using historic documents and old images, they found that the bridges have been painted in colors such as tan, dark brown, steel blue, and various shades of grey and red. In recent years they have all been either green or white.
