Monday, July 3 was the hottest day on record for a world in which rising average temperatures are an increasingly dire prospect. Monday’s average global surface air temperature hit 17.01°C or about 62.62°F.
The measurement was made by the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), and marked the first time the average has passed 17°. The previous record, set last July, was 16.92.
With summer just beginning in the Northern Hemisphere and a season of El Niño arriving, it is likely that more new records may be set soon. The year 2022 was the eighth consecutive year in which global annual temperatures were at least 1 degree above the levels observed between 1850 and 1900.
