A Roman tunnel is Lisbon’s hot ticket

Lisbon’s Roman Galleries, which run under two streets in the heart of the city, will be open to visitors for four days starting next Thursday, but if you don’t have a ticket already, you’re out of luck for now.

The galleries, which were lost to history for centuries, are only opened to visitors for four days, twice a year in April and September, and this spring’s tickets were snatched up within two days.

Officials say the limited visiting is “necessary to maintain relative humidity and water levels inside the building, essential for preserving the structure” for the future. Only open for visits since 2013, they were lost to history until they were rediscovered in 1771 during rebuilding work after the 1755 earthquake that destroyed much of the city.
