The trademark windmill of the landmark Paris cabaret Moulin Rouge made news of their own last week as the windmill’s sails broke loose and crashed to the street, taking part of the Moulin Rouge sign with them.
The nightclub, in operation at the site since 1889, is famous as the original home of the can-can, and featured more recently in the film Moulin Rouge, starring Nicole Kidman. Aside from a Covid closure and a multi-year closure after a 1915 fire, it has been a landmark of Montmartre for 135 years, attracting about 600,000 visitors a year.
So far, authorities have not determined what might have caused the accident, but the cabaret’s owners have promised to restore the sails as quickly as possible.
