Gumbo’s Pic of the Day, Feb 18, 2014: Tower Bridge, London, England

Beautiful Tower Bridge over the River Thames is one of the iconic symbols of London, and one of the world’s most recognized bridges.  Tower Bridge was built (in a “Victorian Gothic” style) to harmonize with the nearby Tower of London.  British lore has it that folks in Arizona thought this is the bridge they were buying when they purchased “London Bridge”, though I rather doubt that’s true.

Plans for Tower Bridge were completed around 1876 but construction didn’t begin immediately and the bridge was not completed until 1894.   It’s 265 meter long and like many famous structures was not immediately liked by the all locals (although that sentiment has changed with time).  The bridge has the ability to left the two central bridge decks up towards the towers to accommodate ship traffic, the decks opening to an 83 degree angle.  While this feature of the bridge was used frequently when initially built, today it only opens a few times a day (lifts are prescheduled so if you’re interested in seeing this, go here for the schedule).

Besides looking at it or walking across it, you can also go inside Tower Bridge and look around.  Inside is the Tower Bridge Exhibition, a display area that encompasses the two famous towers;  you can observe the Victorian engine room and learn more about its history.  And there’s a magnificent view over London and the River Thames from the upper walkway between the two towers.  A worthwhile stop for tourists to London, especially those traveling with children.

The View North

I was visiting a friend, and this was the view from their house. I could understand why they built their house facing this direction. I was taken by the beauty!
