Where in the World is TravelGumbo (#77)

WITW 77

Gumbo has left the world of fascinating architecture and cathedrals (most recently in Spain and Charleston), and is on the go again.  Gumbo’s gone from the steamy heat of the south to this cooler body of water.  He’s got a purpose in where he’s going, but what is it and more importantly, where is it?

THE RULES

  1. Share your suggestions, hints and discussions with others by posting them here as comments…
  2. If you absolutely know where it is….please give others a couple of days to work on it before you pounce. If the answer is burning your fingers, e-mail it to [email protected] and we’ll publish it Wednesday night…right or wrong!
  3. To post here, you need to be  a member…but that’s free and easy.  Just click HERE

So, exactly where is Gumbo today?  Please be as specific as possible.

Huuummm… still looks somewhere with North American influence given the delivery truck make and the hi-vis vest on the ferry man. But flat and cool….

Across the water looks all the world like an airport to me.  Hangars, possibly a fuel truck and what appears to be a runway at the far right.

Certainly hangers but with quite low doors… A large fuel(?) bowser? Looks like a jet blast shield at the end of the runway and sea all around(?). Must have public access or just ‘not secret’ due to the ferry and Dr. F taking photos, so not military.

Why does Dr F ask what the hanger shapes remind me of?

It looks as if cars are in front of the hanger doors.. Is that logical? Are we talking seaplanes I wonder… but no slipway and why a runway?

Water looks very calm…. crossing one of the Lakes on the US / Canadian border ?

It makes me wonder if it isn’t a private facility or even a manufacturer, as opposed to a public airport.  Like a Boeing factory, or similar.  Or general aviation (private planes).

Assuming they’re hangars, the doors for the planes would be on the other side, cars on this side employees’ cars.  I’m thinking now that this could be any airport.  Now, finding an airport near water, lots of those, but one with a ferry as a neighbor, not many of those I suspect.

I think that I’ve missed the ferry…. 🙁

OK, onward.  Sprint Insight, a Canadian company (78 Millwick Dr, North York ON, M9L 1Y3) and grain elevators, maybe?  But I haven’t been to Canada for a number of years so the city isn’t familiar to me.

More specifically, I think the first picture shows Toronto Island Airfield, and the second the mainland end of the Western Channel.

I think I knew this one right from day one, but saved my guess until now.  I have to say the TravelGumbo members are great detectives, for I do believe they pretty much solved this puzzle.  My guess is:  Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport, which is located on an island just 122 m (400 ft) from shore (downtown Toronto).  I believe the  ferry route is one of the world’s shortest regularly scheduled ferry routes.

I wasn’t suggesting any particular province, only confirming that Sprint Insight has an Ontario corporate address.  I’m thinking not as far west as BC, maybe a plains province, given the the grain elevator, if that’s what it is.

I’ll take back Vancouver and pass on the part of Great Lakes I might have thought of, now that I notice how short the ferry distance is, terminal to terminal…

Could be silly of me, but I’m thinking further west, maybe Vancouver area, looking for an area where the ferry is likely.

At first, I was thinking the Pacific North West or BC, but the grain elevator points strongly to the Great Lakes. This is supported by Port Moresby’s observation of the Ontario company’s container. The largest city in the province is Toronto.  It has an airfield beside the lake, and my own photograph from the top of the CN Tower taken a few years ago shows hangers just like in the first picture. I therefore vote for Toronto lake shore.

The View North

I was visiting a friend, and this was the view from their house. I could understand why they built their house facing this direction. I was taken by the beauty!
