Gumbo’s Pic of the Day, Mar. 1, 2014: Details, Charleston P.O.

I hadn’t even gotten in the door of Charleston, SC’s historic post office and Federal courthouse when I was caught by this doorknob. And that was only the beginning of the gorgeous details, as you can see.

Sometimes, I find a building less interesting than its details. And I must have taken this one that way, because in hundreds of shots over a weekend, I find no pictures of the exterior of this 1896 building that was the center of Charleston’s first “downtown revitalization” over a century ago. Here’s a borrowed picture!

The details in that post office are grand!  Like stepping back to a time when fine detailed craftsmanship still mattered.

 

The post office has a small but interesting museum worth a quick visit as well.

I was visiting a friend, and this was the view from their house. I could understand why they built their house facing this direction. I was taken by the beauty!
