One evening as we were returning to our hotel near St. Mark’s Cathedral in Venice, slowly cruising down the Grand Canal on a vaporetto (water bus), the sun began to set. In the last moments of daylight, that magical time of day John Steinbeck called “the hour of the pearl”, we came across this most relaxing scene.
An elderly man was sitting on a deck, sipping a glass of white wine. He was just enjoying this moment of everyday life, taking in the changing daylight and traffic on the Canal. I presume the bottle in the window means he’s going to be there for awhile! A nice slice of everyday life, a memorable moment and, for me, a nice way to end that travel day.
