It had been a number of years since I’d seen a Checker cab. The last place I expected to find one was in the small mountain town of Leadville, Colorado. Leadville is situated over 10,000 ft above sea level, the town having morphed from a mining center to an outdoor adventure destination in the last few decades.
We were parked in one of the town’s public lots when we saw the old cab sitting there. Slightly beat up and somewhat rusty, it still had a lot of character and obviously was someone’s private vehicle now; I can’t tell you any more than that about it. Checker taxicabs were made in Kalamazoo, MI from 1958 to 1982 and, in my opinion, are beautiful machines as were so many automobiles from that era.
