Estonia and Finland take next step to build an undersea rail tunnel

Estonia and Finland on Tuesday agreed to take another step towards building an undersea railway tunnel linking capitals Tallinn to Helsinki.

Estimated to cost about 13 billion euros, the tunnel would add Helsinki to the Rail Baltica high-speed route between Tallinn and Warsaw. The Baltic states of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania plan to build it by 2025.

A study about the tunnel between Tallinn and Warsaw was published last February and now the two countries seek funding from the European Union to continue the project.

The railway tunnel would cut down the travel time to 30 minutes, instead of a two hour ferry, making it one areaIMG_0426. The two cities already have been referred to as Talsinki .
