This month the Centers for Disease Control and Protection came out with an alert asking pregnant women of any stage of pregnancy to consider delaying travel to 14 destinations in Latin America and the Caribbean because of the Zika virus.
Zika virus which is spread through mosquito bites. Though It causes only a mild illness in most people, there’s been some evidence linking Zika infection in pregnant women to a rare birth defect called microcephaly, in which the babies head is smaller than normal and the brain has not developed properly. Zika infection has also been linked to other poor pregnancy outcomes. The CDC states ” More studies are planned to learn more about the risks of Zika virus infection during pregnancy.”
The CDC’s list of destinations pregnant women should consider delaying travel to:
Brazil,
Colombia,
El Salvador,
French Guiana,
Guatemala,
Haiti,
Honduras,
Martinique,
Mexico,
Panama,
Paraguay,
Puerto Rico,
Suriname,
Venezuela

The Zika Virus has gotten a lot more attention in the last couple of weeks and a growing number of airlines and cruise lines are offering pregnant women refunds or a chance to rebook.
