British tour companies cancel Tunisia vacations

Britain’s biggest tour operators, Thomas Cook and Thomson, have cancelled all summer vacations they’ve sold for destinations in Tunisia, citing security concerns after an attack last year that killed 38 vacationers.

The companies had been selling the travel packages despite advice by the British Foreign Office recommending against travel to the area; the companies have now apologized to customers for ignoring the advice.

Those who had already booked are being offered a choice of refunds or discounted packages to other locations. Likely winners will be European destinations such as Spain, Italy and Greece, which gained favor last year as well, as concerns increased about travel to Egypt and North Africa.
