Burning effigies marked the end last weekend of Valencia’s spectacular Las Fallas festival, with hundreds of giant effigies in wood, cardboard and papier-mache put to the torch.
The festival, which goes back 400 years, is in honor of St. Joseph, patron saint of (among others) the carpenters’ guild. The effigies, known as ninots, represent all kinds of figures, popular and unpopular. Prominent this year among the unpopular was Spanish Prime Minister Rajoy; on the popular side, Pope Francis was depicted.
