May 3, 2016: Torrey Pines Gliderport, CA

To get where you want to go using a GPS, you need to know where you’re going. I knew I wanted to go to a beach in La Jolla, California, but I didn’t have a specific address, so I just entered the city.

SD75When I left the Interstate I found myself on a college campus and wound my way in the direction I thought was the ocean. When I dead-ended in a massive parking lot, I turned to my GPS again and entered “beach.” It calculated and I started following the directions.

Sometimes not knowing exactly where you want to go has its advantages. I ended up at Torrey Pines Gliderport where paragliders soared above the cliffs. I watched for a long time and walked to the edge of a cliff to take in a broader view.

I returned to my hotel after that, satisfied that although I didn’t walk on a sandy beach this day, I have a great beach experience.

As a younger man this sort of thing might have been something I’d do.  But now I’m happy to watch others have fun — and it really does look like fun!  Thanks for sharing these beautiful images, Marilyn!
