Swiss airline will keep Geneva on the map

Swiss Airlines has abandoned its plan to abandon routes to Geneva, one of the country’s main cities. The airline, the national flag carrier, had said it was losing money on the routes.

After continued protests, especially from French-speaking areas of Switzerland, the airline has shifted course and will keep Geneva as a base. Protesters, who had called the plan “shameful” welcomed the new announcement.

The airline is a subsidiary of Lufthansa. The airline’s head of operations for western Switzerland said there may still be a reduction in the number of destinations served by direct flights.

The turnaround is based, at least in part, on operating most of the routes with the airline’s newest planes, arriving this spring: a fleet of economical CS series jets from Canada’s Bombardier.
