Britain may be leaving Europe, but plenty of Britons are headed there, by train and car, through the Channel Tunnel, which posted record profits last year.
Eurotunnel, the tunnel’s operator, posted profits of over €200 million last year, and saw 2.66 million cars and 1.64 million trucks passing through. Profits and traffic were both up. The company also posted gains from buying a company that operates an electric link that runs through the tunnel.
When the tunnel first opened 20 years ago, it had several years of losses and predictions that it would ultimately fail, but despite competition from low-cost airlines, it has found its feet.
