While the Erie Canal is mostly used for pleasure craft, there is still some industrial traffic. When there are items that are too large or heavy to put on trains or trucks, companies still use the canal to ship them. I had the chance to see Genesee Brewery’s new beer vats pass through several of the canal’s locks. Even in the pouring rain it was quite a sight to watch the experienced crew wrangle these huge vats, and they were experts.
