American Airlines, which a few weeks ago said it would squeeze more passengers into its new 737 MAX planes by stealing legroom has now backed off and won’t take away as much.
The seating in Economy will still shrink from 31″ between rows to 30″, but the airline is cancelling plans to take three rows down to 29″, a territory usually used only by the ultra-low-cost carriers such as Spirit.
In a letter to employees, the airline said “It is clear that today, airline customers feel increasingly frustrated by their experiences and less valued when they fly. We can be leaders in helping to turn around that perception, and that includes reviewing decisions that have significant impact on the flying experience.”
Since the original plan was intended to fit more seats in the plane, it’s not clear whether the new plan will mean fewer seats.
