Shoebox America, 1969

A few nostalgic moments from a cross-country road trip in the summer of 1969, the year the Mets lost last place.

These were culled from my too-large collection of scanned photos and negatives.5083Our beat-up Valiant, at a motel in Colorado Springs, near the Garden of the Gods, where the cringe-worthy by today’s standards pictures below were made.

And some color images: the first one makes me think of William Least Heat Moon’s book, Blue Highways, although his reference was to map-line color. Below it, a long shot of the Royal Gorge Bridge, near Cañon City, Colorado.
